"The progress that Langston made over the years at the school is evident. His speech became much more pronounced as he began to talk better; his diction is perfect; his sentences have become longer; he's been able to actually comprehend better: he's made just wonderful progress. I would say it's a loving environment with a staff that's very caring, very understanding. From a parent's point of view I feel very secure that my son is there. I know he is getting a good education. They're doing all that they can to provide a growing atmosphere."

Eligibility
Children, adolescents and young adults from infants through 21 years old who present delays or disorders in one or more areas of development (e.g., speech, language, learning or academic, motor, hearing, self-help and social) are eligible for services. Children with specific diagnostic conditions such as autism, speech impairment, mental retardation, hearing impairment, Down syndrome, or cerebral palsy often are eligible for services.
Costs
Nearly all programs are provided at no direct cost to parents. Funding is provided in part by New York State through the Department of Education, Department of Health's Early Intervention Program, the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, as well as Counties of Western New York including Erie and Niagara.
To Make a Referral
Specific referral steps differ considerably depending upon the age of the individual being referred. Interested persons are encouraged to call our admissions office for more information. When you call, we will obtain information about the child, answer any questions you may have about our programs, and guide you through the referral process. Typically, it is the responsibility of the county or local school district in which each child resides to make a formal referral to Summit. The following is a brief summary of how the process may work for you:
Birth - 2 Years Old - An application for evaluation or services must be approved by the county in which the child's resides.
3 - 4 Year Olds -- The child's local school must approve an application for evaluation or services.
5 - 21 Year Olds - An application for placement or evaluation must be approved by the child's local school district through its committee on special education.
Family Support Services - Many of Summit's family support services are funded through a state program called Medicaid Waiver Home and Community-Based Services. A child or adult with a diagnosed developmental disability (evidenced before age 21) may qualify for these services and a call to Summit can start the process.
Simply call us at 716.629.3445 and we will guide you through the referral process. You can also download an application online. (click here)
